Visit Guide to Gala Archaeological and Ethnographic Museum

This is an open-air museum located about 40km from Baku where you can witness rock paintings, items from the 3rd-2nd millennia BC and a fortress dating from the 14th century with an incredible view of the Absheron Peninsula. The site also contains a replica medieval town, where you can try carpet-weaving, pottery, bread-baking and blacksmithing.

Getting There

The reserve is located a 30-min drive from Baku, in the village of Gala. Buses go in the direction of the village, from where you will need to take a taxi to reach the reserve, but if you want a comfortable ride, you can taxi a taxi from Baku directly to the reserve.

What to Expect

This open-air museum offers a wide range of activities – you can visit the on-site museum-fortress, take a carpet-weaving master-class, walk along the underground passages dating back to the medieval era, visit the local zoo and even watch how creative minds make art exhibits from different types of rubbish in a museum called “From Waster to Art”.

History

The reserve was established in 2008 in the area where more than 2000 archaeological findings and monuments are located.
